There were only 1631 Cyclone Spoilers produced in 1970, making them one of the rarest Muscle Cars produced. The base engine was the 429 Cobra Jet producing 370 Horsepower and 450 lb-ft Torque. They were more a gentleman's Muscle Car with plush interiors, softer spring rates and extra sound deadener. They also offered more in the trim department as well. Hideaway headlights were an option and really make that big 'Gunsight Grille' make sense. Keeping with the name, a rear spoiler was fitted along with large 2-piece bumper mounted air dam in the front. Tasteful longitudinal stripes ran down the sides and 'Spoiler' decals were both on the hood and trunklid.
This car has survived the last 51 years mostly in-tact and is ready for your attention. The paint is mostly original with some repainted sections done quite some time ago. It doesn't appear the car was ever involved in a serious collision as the frame rails & floors show no obvious signs of damage. There is some rust but not the extent you see in most examples, this is a very save-able car. The floors are quite solid, especially for the breed. There is a spot of rust just behind the back seat, an odd spot but its an easy repair and photo'd for you to see.
Obviously this is best described as a project car. It does run and drive but lots of items should be serviced/restored/replaced prior to any road trips. The exhaust is mostly original, including 1 muffler, its on there but doesn't do much in the way of muffling any more. The brakes have been serviced with a new master and wheel cylinders so they work ok but new hoses and a front bearing pack should be done.
The interior is complete but indeed in need of a restoration. Luckily there are companies to restore dash pads and door panels nowadays. The Cyclone dash gauges were perhaps the coolest of the generation and are still present. There is some work to be done but at least it wont be trying to find impossible parts.
The Hideaway Headlights work nicely, which is a refreshing surprise. The 1-way valves that commonly fail are now available and quite cheap to boot. If you need parts they share many common parts with the Cougar.
The 429 Cobra Jet is the original born with, numbers matching engine. The engine fire right up and runs fine, it could use a good road trip to free up the rings and clean out the carbon from sitting. At some point the cylinder heads were replaced with the D2 version. This was often done to lower the compression to a pump-gas friendly compression ratio. The D2 used smaller (but still big) ports and valves. The factory CJ intake, Quadra-Jet carburetor, engine ID tag, exhaust manifolds, heat shield and VIN stamped block are still in place. The C6 transmission appears to be the original with the tell-tale cast iron tail housing and 'R' servo.
Out back, it appears the original 9" is still in place with its original 'N' case and 31 spline axles. This car carries the optional 3.25 Traction-Lok axle option.
