Belts and ropes turning pulleys were the standard means of conveying power in manufactories, up until electric motors providing power to individual machines became widespread in the 1920s and 1930s. And there were still a number of manufactories still using steam engines belted to a pulley system in the 1950s. By the 1960s however, such establishments were the rare curiosity.
This book will give you the a nice overview of the mathematics and mechanics involved in belted power systems. Even threshermen and operators of old farm stationary engines might find some useful material here, especially in the section on caring for and repairing belts.
